Lucky Sixpence Necklace: A Meaningful Christmas Gift for Good Luck
There’s something magical about the little traditions we return to every Christmas. The ones we remember from childhood, pass down through families and hope our own children will remember one day.
In our family, my mum still hides a sixpence in the Christmas pudding every single year. Whoever finds it is said to have good luck and prosperity for the year ahead, and it’s one of those little Christmas traditions I’ve always loved.
This year, it gave me an idea.
I wanted to turn that tiny piece of Christmas nostalgia into something that could be kept, worn and treasured.
And so, The Lucky Sixpence Necklace was born.
Why do we put a sixpence in a Christmas pudding?
The tradition of hiding a silver sixpence inside a Christmas pudding has been passed down through generations.
Finding the sixpence in your portion of Christmas pudding was traditionally believed to bring good luck and prosperity for the year ahead.
I love that something so tiny can hold so much meaning. It feels wonderfully nostalgic and exactly the sort of tradition that belongs at Theodore & Olive.
A Christmas tradition, handmade in sterling silver
I didn’t want to simply recreate an old coin. I wanted to take the sentiment behind the Christmas pudding sixpence tradition and turn it into a piece of jewellery that could become a keepsake in its own right.
Each Lucky Sixpence Necklace is handmade in sterling silver in my East Sussex studio.
The little silver coin is engraved with the words Lucky Sixpence and a star at its centre, with a softly textured background that gives it the character of a treasured old coin.
It’s a little nod to Christmases gone by, made to be worn today.
The perfect meaningful Christmas gift
Finding the perfect Christmas gift isn’t always easy, particularly when you want to give someone something that feels personal and has a meaning behind it.
That’s what makes the Lucky Sixpence Necklace such a lovely Christmas gift.
You’re not simply giving someone a piece of sterling silver jewellery. You’re giving them a little token of luck, happiness and good fortune for the year ahead.
It makes a thoughtful Christmas gift for a mum, daughter, sister, best friend or someone special, particularly someone beginning a new chapter or who could use a little extra luck.
And because of its Christmas pudding story, I think it makes an especially lovely gift to open on Christmas Day.
A good luck charm to wear all year round
Although its story begins at Christmas, I deliberately wanted the Lucky Sixpence to be something that doesn’t feel like Christmas jewellery.
At heart, it’s a little good luck charm.
It can be worn for a new job, a new home, an exam, a big adventure, a fresh start or simply as your own little lucky token.
The Christmas tree can come down, the decorations can go back into their boxes and the last mince pie can disappear…
but your Lucky Sixpence stays with you.
A little piece of Christmas luck
Some of the loveliest Christmas presents aren’t the biggest or the most extravagant. They’re the little things with a story behind them.
For me, this one began with my mum putting a sixpence in our Christmas pudding every year.
Now I’ve turned that family tradition into a handmade sterling silver Lucky Sixpence Necklace that can be gifted at Christmas, treasured afterwards and worn all year round.
A little piece of Christmas luck to carry with you into the year ahead. ✨
